“Good Luck and Good Timing”
In 1995, General Steel founder Jeff Knight saw an opportunity to establish a brand name in the steel building industry. So he emptied his savings account to buy one radio advertisement for his new company, General Steel. With a radio spot on a nationally recognized show, and the catchy slogan “if you need space…you NEED the General,” Knight expected to gain some traction.
But Monday morning, the phone sat silent. That was when Knight received a call from Ken-Caryl Water and Sanitation District offices, located directly down the street from the General Steel headquarters in Littleton, Colorado. They told Knight their phones were ringing off the hooks with people wanting to know more about General Steel.
The radio spot had run with the wrong toll-free number, but by a stroke of luck, it was for the office across the street!
Since those sometimes uncertain early days, General Steel, with the most experienced team, hundreds of millions of dollars in steel sales and more than 20,000 steel buildings sold worldwide, The General has solidified itself as the industry leader in steel buildings.
General Steel has provided steel buildings for the White House on multiple occasions as well as buildings for Boeing, General Motors, Dow Chemical, Disney, NASA, Walmart, Wells Fargo, Oklahoma State University and the United States Air Force Academy; 54 brands in all, across 26 industries and in 14 countries throughout the world.
One of General Steel’s guiding principles is a commitment to philanthropy and community support, which is why, on several occasions, we’ve donated steel buildings to organizations and areas in need.
Helping the Victims of the LRA in Uganda
One of General Steel’s proudest collaborations was with TCON (The Children of the Nile) in Uganda. TCON is an aid and development organization that fights poverty and cultivates hope for future generations in Uganda. More specifically, TCON has used two steel buildings donated by General Steel to create a hospice and youth center in Soroti, Uganda. The hospice provides a place of dignity for the sick and the youth center provides a multipurpose covered sports court for the youth to focus on athletics.
